Audio Services Not Responding Error in Windows 10

Audio Services Not responding error is generated by Windows Audio Troubleshooter which usually runs whenever Windows is unable to interact with Audio Devices on your computer. This error message can be caused by a variety of reasons, ranging from Windows Audio Services becoming unresponsive to Audio Device Drivers becoming outdated or corrupted.

1. Check Windows Privacy Settings

Follow the steps below to make sure that Apps running on your computer have access to Microphone.

  1. Open Settings and click on the Privacy tab.

  2. On privacy screen, scroll down in the left-pane and click on Microphone. In the right-pane, make sure Microphone has access to your computer.

If Microphone access is disabled, click on Change and allow Microphone to access your computer.

2. Update Audio Device Driver

Follow the steps below to Update the driver software for Audio Device on your computer.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.

  2. On Device Manager screen, expand Sound, video and game controllers entry > right-click on the Audio Device and click on Update driver option.

  3. On the next screen, click on Search Automatically For Driver Software option and follow the instructions to install driver software.

3. Run Windows Troubleshooter

The built-in Troubleshooter in Windows 10 can also be trusted to find and fix Audio problems on your computer.

  1. Open Settings and click on Update & Security.

  2. On the next screen, click on Troubleshoot option in the left-pane. In the right-pane, scroll down and click on Playing Audio > Run the Troubleshooter.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions as Windows Troubleshooter tries to find and fix Audio problems on your computer.

  4. On the next screen, click on the option that appears to be true in your case. In our case, there was no sound coming from the Headphones and we clicked on Try again using Microsoft HD Audio Driver.

Finally, Windows found a problem with the Audio Driver and Fixed the issue.

4. Restart Windows Audio Service and Audio Components

Windows Audio Service can sometimes become unresponsive or get disabled on a Windows computer.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and click on Run.

  2. In Run Command window, type services.msc and click on the OK button

  3. On the Services screen, right-click on Windows Audio and click on Restart.

On the same screen, make sure Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, RPC EndPoint Mapper, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and DCOM Service Process Launcher are running and the “Startup Type” for these services is set to Automatic.

If the Startup Type is not set to Automatic, right-click on the Audio Service > click on Properties. On the next screen, set “Startup type” to Automatic and click on OK.

Once you are done, restart the Computer to implement above changes.

5. Reinstall Audio Drivers

The problem of Windows Audio Services not responding on your computer might be related to device drivers for the Sound Controller getting corrupted.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.

  2. On Device Manager screen, expand Sound, video and game controllers entry > right-click on the Audio device and click on Uninstall device option.

  3. Next, click on Action tab in top-menu bar and select Scan for hardware changes option in the drop-down menu.

Also, it is better to Restart your computer and allow Windows to automatically install the right device driver.
